General Ledger III provides the ledger and accounts facilities without the complexity of feature heavy packages. All that is needed is an understanding of the double entry book keeping.
Pros: Most accounting packages try to cover all kinds of features for doing the accounting for the complete spectrum of businesses from a small one to a large corporation. It gets to be very frustrating for small professional offices to figure out details out of the feature details and avoid the ones not required.
What the General Ledger III does is to make available all the features small businesses need right from the various ledgers to income statements (P&L accounts). All the skill it needs to operate effectively is an understanding of the double entry book keeping rules.
GL III has specialized registers for checks, petty cash, a company credit card and sales ledgers. The specialized journals speed up data entry, but each voucher you enter is simply a debit or series of debits plus a balancing credit or series of credits.
Editing of already entered vouchers is very easy. Once the vouchers have been straightened out and the accounts balance alright one can generate the profit & loss statements as well as the balance sheet without any problem. The user interface makes it easy to operate all the features of the program. The available help manual is very detailed and useful, this complements the interface that is easy and intuitive to use.
Best time to get started with this program is at the beginning of a fiscal year, then there are no old data to be managed. Next best time would be at the beginning of a month when balances from all the accounts except the P&L will have to be entered.
Cons: Since accounting information is really very sensitive, authorized access is very important; particularly so in a small office. It is absolutely necessary that access authorization and authentication be available.
Overall this is a very good application, a 3 star rated effort.
