Small and free personal book manager software.
Pros: Bookie is a small and free personal book manager software that can be used to organize book, book`s category, book`s publisher, etc. Organizing can be by book’s publisher or the category defined. To keep things entirely flexible, the categories are completely user defined. When starting one must define a few categories to get started and then keep adding others. This allows defining categories as the user sees it fit, besides each user is likely to have different tastes and hence be interested in different categories of books. Publishers could be any of hundreds that exist. One just defines them as you encounter them while entering details into the database. While adding books into the data table one can add free form notes about the particular book too.
Search for books can be made on the basis of ISBN number, publisher, title, category or author.
The user interface is very simple, a few menu choices on the top, a spreadsheet like main operating area and an explorer like filtering window. Depending on the current selection it shows the hierarchy of the categories or the list of publishers. Selecting a specific item on this window will show the set of books of that category/ publisher on the right.
The application is distributed as an exe file and does not require any installation.
Cons: The program obviously uses an internal database. What happens when the data is large is difficult to predict. The issues would be the performance factors which are likely to deteriorate when the data population grows.
As is usual with any such application, if one already has a large collection of books, getting all the existing data entered could be quite tedious.
Overall quite a nice program. For a free package it provides quite a few useful functionalities. Overall rating is 3 stars.
