Editor's review:

RasterStitch is a utility for putting together multiple raster images (stitching). This program can be used to create a panorama of several photographs or scan and join fragments of a paper document – a map for example.

Pros: RasterStitch utility helps join two images along 2 points defined on both photographs. This can be done multiple times to create a bigger picture out of smaller ones. This may help create a panoramic photograph out of a series of photographs which have a little bit of overlap so that these common stitching points could be defined. The utility even helps by automatically defining the stitch points.

Quite often one needs to scan a bigger document while the scanner available can scan a smaller format. This program can help stitch the parts scanned separately and then creating the bigger scan. For example an A0 document can still be scanned via a A4 scanner and then stitching the pieces back together. Image formats supported are BMP, PCX, GIF, JPG, TGA and PNG. Some basic operations that are useful in the stitching operation are available. These are rotate through 90 degrees, horizontal and vertical mirroring and cropping of images through arbitrary custom rectangular boundaries.

The user interface is simple and straightforward. Main space is taken by the display area reserved for the two images to be stitched together. Tool bar icons are simple and self explanatory. The application overall is fairly easy to learn.

Cons: Putting together a larger document from smaller scanned pieces may not cause much problem due to lighting conditions variation in the images as they have been produced from the same scanning session in all likelihood. But creating wide angle views from several individual photos will need to take care of quality conditions of individual photos to be made uniform by editing. Else a distinct line would show and mar the quality of the overall image.

A simple application meets fairly undemanding needs. Overall level for this application is 3 stars.
