A peer to peer file sharing application that brings together several flavors of p2p including Gnutella, BitTorrent, and eDonkey/eMule.

Pros: WinMX MP3 is a peer to peer file sharing application that gathers search results from Gnutella, BitTorrent and eMule. So it is not surprising that the searches end up with more results as well as the fact that sometimes downloads are faster as compared to a file sharing application that say uses only the Gnutella framework. It features all the standard bells and whistles of such a p2p application including library management, filtering, adjusting upload / download speeds and their monitoring, and multiple parallel searches. Additionally, it also features a powerful in built detector for fake and corrupted files, and these are automatically deleted or ignored based on at what time these are detected. This is a welcome feature and will prove useful to users who have been dogged by corrupted files, or malware in the past.

Cons: The problem is that the interface is somewhat simplified. Apart from this the interface is also less intuitive than a lot of other p2p file sharing applications. Consider for example the amount of information that is presented on a search. The information about the host and what network it is part of is somewhat irrelevant, as is the date the file was created information. On the other hand, the information about how many peers / sources have a particular file does not come up readily. It is not clear what (all) information the “status” column supplies.

Additionally, it has somewhat limited customization options. Power users will be somewhat disappointed by this perceived lack of control. This is especially true for torrents.

Overall: 4 stars. It could have shot for 5 stars because it really does get you stuff from all three – Gnutella, emule and BitTorrent. However, this is made up by the backward step that a user will make with respect to the interface.
