A plug-in for the BitComet P2P file-sharing application to improve download performance.

Pros: BitComet Acceleration Patch is as its name suggests something to improve the performance of the BitComet P2P file sharing application. It is not a patch in the exact sense of the word but rather a plug-in that adds to the existing software. It has a small memory footprint, therefore it does not have a performance degradation simply because of its own usage. But it greatly improves download speeds, especially on slower connections. One of the features of the simple and easy-to-use interface is that you can choose which interface that you want the acceleration on, something that is useful for users using more than one connection (a wired as well as wireless for example). The application as such minimizes to the system tray and runs unobtrusively. There are plenty of other useful features: completed and corrupted files are cleared automatically; at pre-specified intervals it looks for more sources (something that the traditional BitComet will not necessarily do) so that it may increase the number of users it is downloading from, this also improves search performance; on shut down or quitting of the application, the configuration is automatically saved and this is reloaded on startup so that all pending and incomplete downloads resume on restarting the computer; on connections with frequent disconnections it will also resume downloads automatically so that the user doesn’t have to worry about it.

Cons: The interface is effective but doesn’t do much more than just allow you to hit the “ACCELERATE!” button. Limited or no customization is possible so that you have to be happy with what you get and that’s it. Marginal improvement on fast connections.

Overall: 4 stars. Works well. Simplistic interface, no customization.
