A tool to protect the data that resides on a user’s local USB drive by limiting access by other computers on a user’s local area network (LAN).
Pros: Disable USB port is essentially a tool to do what it says: disable access to a USB port from outside the user’s computer (i.e. through the user’s local area network or LAN). Therefore, any drive connected to the USB will automatically be protected as well since no other computer on the LAN will be able to access it. In addition to this protection the tool also provides monitoring which records all activity related to the drive like accessing (and which computer or IP address is doing so), copying or moving of files and even connect / disconnect. Alerts are sounded when a device connects or disconnects.
Cons: The easiest way to protect data on a USB drive would be to disconnect the USB drive. If that is not possible then Windows options can take care of it. Contrary to expectations there is enough available to protect the USB drive locally through the Windows OS, so are the connect / disconnect monitors. It is true that the tool provides finer control over what and what is not possible, including monitoring of who is trying to access, but the plain and simple fact is that the interface will discourage one from using this tool. For one it is a terrible font size and color combination that makes it hard to read what the options are, let alone use them. For another some terms will not be understood even by the most seasoned users.
Overall: 3 stars. It does do what it sets out to do. But the interface is poor, to the point of being quite unusable. Most users may find it frustrating to use.
