SmartComb is a nice utility that captures files from your web browser and saves them into your local folders automatically. When you complete your work in web and your web browser is closed SmartComb will start and save recent files into you local folders in accordance with your “filters”. “Filter” is just a condition for file selection and SmartComb uses ones to capture suitable files. For example if you would like to save all video clips you saw in web or save all the pictures in specified size from specified URL SmartComb will make it for you! Would you like to save all the audio that you listened from web automatically? Do you need to save such files from only specified website? SmartComb can make it for you! How does it work? When you search the Internet, your web browser stores the files (pictures, video, audio, etc.) from the pages you visit in what’s called the “cache”. That's way, if you visit the same website later, you computer can retrieve these files from its cache rather than directly off the Internet, which can speed up the time it takes the page to load. SmartComb retrieves recent files from the cache and compares them with set of filters. In this way the suitable files will be saved in the local folders defined in the filters. This version recognizes the following file types: JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG, ICO, FLV, MPG, WMV, SWF, MP3, WAV, PDF, PLAIN, HTML, XML, CSS, JS, and ZIP. SmartComb supports the following web browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Maxthon
- Mozilla Firefox.

A tool to capture files of a website that the user visits using the web browser.
Pros: SmartComb captures files from the web browser and stores them in pre-specified folders on your local hard drive. This is done based on certain “filters” that are defined by the user. A “filter” is a particular criterion for the selection of a file and SmartComb uses these “filters” to capture those selected files. These selections can be done in many ways: 1) By type, for example all audio or video files that you listen to or view respectively can be automatically saved; 2) By website, for example all content of a particular type can be automatically stored from a selected website; 3) By size, everything under a certain size, or a size-range; and more.
It works by saving stuff off of the user’s local internet cache (combing) and because of this it does not take any additional time to download the files from a website – it is done while you are browsing a particular website.
It works with Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Maxthon.
Cons: It is not clear if certain time-specific content (example maps) will automatically be updated once they are updated on a website – that is that the next time you visit the website and the content has changed (but under the same name) then will it update it in the local folder. The “filters” process requires a little bit of learning and you will not master it immediately. Though, all the promised functions work, but the question is really whether or not these functions are useful to begin with – why would you want to save all images from a particular website, you’ll get the required images but you’ll also get many images (advertisements, spacers, backgrounds etc.) which are frankly useless.
Overall: 3 stars. Useful tool, but for a limited number of users such as music, or video enthusiasts. Not too much utility for a general user.
