The Smart Image Server is a web version of the searching functionality within Smart Pix Manager, allowing your to provide visitors to an Internet or intranet page to perform boolean (AND/OR) searches of your images and other multimedia files.
Pros: This application works in conjunction with the Smart Pix manager. This provides search functionality for images and other multimedia files within that server functionality. This package helps provide boolean search and comes up with thumbnails of images and descriptions of multimedia files. One can click on links to display the original images or play the multimedia files. Full support for keyword searching of files on an Internet or intranet site is provided. The boolean search also provides searching by relevance an alphabetically. Test searching is available for description and filename fields, supports for image thumbnails of any size with auto creation of thumbnails for all images, displays image descriptions and customization of title, links and colors of all pages with support of banner advertisements. This works with nearly all web servers. You choose search keywords and then set the options on the right panel in the user interface. Options are search type and search order. Then there are a few other options. Search types have options that include images by any of the keywords selected or all keywords or simply show all available images. Search order specifies order by relevance or an alphabetic order. Show thumbnail, show descriptions and how many images per page are shown are the balance of the options. Search results are shown, depending on options selected, as thumbnails and related descriptions.
Cons: Real test for search engines is in coming up with relevant results when the database is of substantial size. One needs to find that out if the number of images are going to explode, as in photo sharing sites for example.
Overall: Good functionality, easy to use interface makes this application quite a good tool. It is rated at 4 stars.
